Wyoming: Expert Discussion on Cell Phones, Wireless Radiation and Health: Jackson, 31 July 2017

Expert discussion on cell phones, wireless radiation and health, sponsored by the Environmental Health Trust, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 31 at Teton County Public Library, free.

"The forum comes only weeks after the National Frequency Agency of France released research showing nine out of 10 cell phones exceed government radiation limits when researchers tested the way people actually use them—directly next to the body, Davis said. Manufacturers, however, don’t have to test phones directly on the body, like in pants pockets, she said. It’s a major finding in France and internationally and a topic panelists will discuss."

DON’T MISS: Dangerous Communication

Scientists discuss seminal research about cell phones and other health hazards.

JACKSON HOLE, WY – Dr. Devra Davis’s first grandchild was born in 2004 and by the time he was nine months old, he could grab a cell phone, turn it on and even start a game. At first, Davis was a proud grandparent and marveled at her clever grandson. But then the founder/president of the Environmental Health Trust realized there was a lot about cell phones she didn’t know, especially when it came to the impact on young brains.

In her 2007 book The Secret History of the War on Cancer, she titled the final chapter “Presumed Innocent” and raised questions about cell phone safety.

It was the only topic in her book she received pushback about. No one debated tobacco could kill you, or air pollution was bad for your health. “Because you had dead bodies and statistically significant evidence,” she said.

At the time Davis was a typical busy professional, carrying and using multiple cell phones.

What Is the Latest Scandal to Hit the German Car Industry All About?

Allegations have been made that Volkswagen, BMW, Daimler,
Audi and Porsche were colluding in the 1990s and formed a
cartel which possible laid the basis to the 'dieselgate' emission
scandal.

EU regulator expected to take a tough line over allegations of cartel-like behaviour

The allegations of collusion among German carmakers have plunged an industry already tarnished by the Volkswagen diesel scandal into a fresh crisis.

The news magazine Der Spiegel reported on Friday that German carmakers VW, BMW, Daimler, Audi and Porsche had been engaging in cartel-like behaviour since the 1990s, in particular colluding with each other on the technical details of diesel exhaust treatment systems.

The European Union competition authorities have opened an investigation, and Germany’s economics minister says the credibility of the whole German car industry is at stake.

Re. Article by François Meylan, Secretary-General of the of the Christian Democratic People's Party, "Sterility, A Major Health Issue" (24 heures, 15 April 2013)

"It is time to sound the alarm on the issue of sterility", writes Mr. Meylan.  We incriminate endocrine disruptors found in pesticides and plastics.  No one dares point the finger at our favorite devices: smartphones, laptops, tablets... Keeping a smartphone switched on in the pocket or on the belt harms the genetic code and mobility of sperm.  One is radiating the sensitive parts of the body with electromagnetic waves, classified by WHO as "possibly carcinogenic".  Moreover, a laptop, tablet or iPad on one's lap, connected to Wi-Fi, which emits the same type of waves, can damage fertility.  The exposure to radiation of these devices can also have a negative impact on female fertility and increase the risk of miscarriage during pregnancy.

The Correlation Between Cell Phone Use and Testicular Cancer, Reduced Testosterone Levels, Lowered Seminal Volume and Sperm Count

Ladies, too, should beware regarding carrying cell phones near the pelvis or using laptops on the lap.  According to David O. Carpenter, M.D., Director of the Institute for Health and Environment at the University at Albany, "For women, the studies aren't quite there yet, but I think we can say that anything that might cause cancer almost always causes birth defects, so pregnant women—or those wanting to become pregnant soon—should take extra precautions."

A correlation between cell phone use and testicular cancer, reduced testosterone levels, lowered seminal volume and sperm count? Read on to see...

You've probably started hearing in the media about emerging studies showing possible correlations between heavy cell phone use and brain tumors. But what not many people are talking about is the risk of carrying cell phones in our pockets for hours each day. This is where it gets even more interesting and a little scary too!

First of all, to both guys and gals... read this article carefully, as it contains some potentially scary health issues related to cell phone use. And although the examples are geared towards men's issues, I wouldn't trust that it's only men that can experience health issues from heavy cell phone use.

"The Invisible Rainbow": The Story of the Invention and Use of Electricity from an Environmental Point of View

I am reading this amazing, informative book by Arthur Firstenberg.  It is my hope that everyone who does NOT believe that electricity can harm humans, plants and animals will read this book.

THE INVISIBLE RAINBOW
by Arthur Firstenberg, 2017

THE STORY OF the invention and use of electricity has often been told before, but never from an environmental point of view. The assumption of safety, and the conviction that electricity has nothing to do with life, are by now so entrenched in the human psyche that new research, and testimony by those who are being injured, are not enough to change the course that society has set. Two increasingly isolated worlds—that inhabited by the majority, who embrace new electrical technology without question, and that inhabited by a growing minority, who are fighting for survival in an electrically polluted environment—no longer even speak the same language. In The Invisible Rainbow, Arthur Firstenberg bridges the two worlds. In a story that is rigorously scientific yet easy to read, he provides a surprising answer to the question, “How can electricity be suddenly harmful today when it was safe for centuries?”

“Children are not little adults and are disproportionately impacted by all environmental exposures, including cell phone radiation. Current FCC standards do not account for the unique vulnerability and use patterns specific to pregnant women and children.”
—American Academy of Pediatrics, 2013

Don’t run with scissors. Don’t talk to strangers. Don’t play with matches. Don’t drink and drive. Don’t do drugs.

Parents are eternally concerned about their children’s safety. From infancy to adolescence, children are developing humans—physically, behaviorally and intellectually. To emerge as healthy, well-adjusted adults, kids need their parents’ protection. And when it comes to children and wireless-tech safety, there’s a lot parents need to know.

Are you carrying your cellphone too close to your body?
by Nara Schoenberg, Chicago Tribune,

In the movie "La La Land," the heroine fields calls in the current style, with her cellphone pressed close to her ear.

When President Barack Obama gave his farewell address, he equated innovation with "a computer in every pocket."

Some users sleep with their cellphones on the nightstand — or even tucked under the pillow.

But how close should you really get to your cellphone?

The answer depends, in part, on whom you ask. Government experts say cellphones, which emit radio frequency radiation, have not conclusively been linked to any health problem. But some critics point to studies they say raise concerns, including a preliminary report by the National Toxicology Program that rats exposed to cellphone radiation experienced a small but significant increase in heart and brain tumors. Critics also point to studies indicating that cellphone exposure may negatively affect sperm quality.

New study finds women carry smartphones in bra despite manufacturer’s radiation warnings.

A new Australian study that will inform cancer research has found that 25 per cent of women have carried their smartphone tucked into their bra, with 15 per cent having done so in the last week. This is despite phone manufacturers warning customers not to store smartphones against the body or in clothing.

Detroit — A former Volkswagen AG executive will plead guilty to some charges related to his alleged role in the automaker’s diesel emission cheating scandal, federal court authorities said Tuesday.

Oliver Schmidt, a German national, is charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, violating the Clean Air Act and aiding and abetting wire fraud. It was unclear which of those charges he will plea guilty to.

The U.S. District court for Eastern Michigan on Tuesday said Schmidt will plea guilty at a hearing at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 4 in Detroit.

Federal judge Sean Cox in March denied Schmidt a pretrial bond release after he was indicted for his role in the automaker’s diesel emission scandal. Schmidt was ordered to stay at a home in Rochester, wear a tether and GPS tracker, stay confined to the home and surrender his passport.

"As a matter of principle: BMW Group (BMWYY, -0.01%) vehicles are not manipulated and comply with respective legal requirements," the company said in the statement. "The BMW Group categorically rejects accusations that Euro 6 diesel vehicles sold by the company do not provide adequate exhaust gas treatment due to AdBlue tanks that are too small."

Yet Another New Study Proves Our Phones Are Killing Us
by Andy Snydermanwardpress.com, 8 June 2017

The bad news is piling up.

We’ve long said modern humans are the guinea pigs in a nasty and dangerous experiment.

We’ve been put to the test, exposed to the risks… and now the results are trickling in.

They’re not good.

A new report published in the American Journal of Epidemiology confirmed that folks who have used their cellphones for 558 hours or more have, get this, more than a doubled risk of brain cancer.

Again… just 558 hours on the phone and our risk for brain cancer more than doubles.

Why you should never place the smartphone on the bedside table
freundin.de, 8 February 2017

Do you always put your smartphone on the bedside or worse, on the bed? This is bad because then you are constantly exposed to the radiation of your smartphone. And this can lead to changes in brain cells, which can be carcinogenic

It does not matter much, however, to switch the mobile phone to flight mode. The radiation becomes much weaker because the device can no longer be selected in the mobile network and WLAN and Bluetooth are switched off. The radiation does not go away, though. Only if you switch off the phone completely. It is best to place your smartphone in the kitchen or living room overnight. So you can be sure that your sleep will not be disturbed by radiation at night.

Cell Phone Scandal: We Are Being Exposed to 3 Times the Amount of Radiation That Manufacturers Claim

"Popular cell phones emit shocking levels of radiation when used close to the body."

To cut down on your own exposure, experts recommend sharply limiting cell phone use, substituting texts for phone calls, and keeping wireless turned off as often as possible. And, of course, keep your phone a safe distance from your body – it may be one of the most important things you can do for your health.

NaturalHealth365.com, 16 July 2017

(NaturalHealth365) Cell phone radiation – linked to brain cancer, cognitive difficulties and other health problems – is an increasingly troubling concern for natural health advocates and experts. And, with the emergence last month of shocking new research, the stakes have just been raised.

According to data released by a French government agency, 9 out of 10 popular cell phone models exceeded regulatory limits for radiation when re-tested to reflect the ways in which people customarily carry and use them – close to their own bodies. The explosive findings, dubbed as “Phonegate,” have sparked new calls for better testing and regulation of cell phones.

What Parents Should Know About EMFs And Wi-Fi

Lloyd’s of London and Swiss Re, two major insurance companies of the world, will not cover medical expenses incurred due to electromagnetic radiofrequency radiation (EMR), i.e., cell phones, Wi-Fi, cell towers, antennas, DAS network coverage, Internet of Things (IoT), devices, smart meters, etc. What does that tell you?

What Parents Should Know About EMFs And Wi-Fi

by Catherine J. Frompovichnaturalblaze.com, 22 July 2017

EMFs (electromagnetic frequencies) and RFs (radio frequencies) contribute to Electrosmog; both frequencies affect and compromise the human organism, especially children’s.

I’ve been a consumer health researcher since the late 1970s. I was one of the few healthcare professionals to learn and to be concerned about vaccine adverse events in the 1980s, since either doctors I knew or those I worked with began hearing Moms’ heart-wrenching stories of how their infants were damaged by vaccines and had not been the same since. As a result of that exposure on a very definitive timeline, I’ve been following the research, activism, corporatism, and politics of vaccines ever since. My 2013 book was Vaccination Voodoo What YOU Don’t Know About Vaccines is available on Amazon.com.

However, for how harmful vaccines are for virtually castrating the immature immune system of an infant and/or toddler, there is something equally as harmful, if maybe not worse, which just about everyone thinks is perfectly safe. What I’m talking about is microwave technology wavelengths that enable all the smart phones, Apps and other high tech devices and games most people “buy into and love,” plus accept as “safe.” Nothing can be further from the authentic scientific facts.

Should We Worry About Wi-Fi Radiation?

Should we worry about Wi-Fi radiation?
en.azvision.az, 22 July 2017

At home and at work, dozens of wireless networks are streaming invisible radio waves through your space and body. (So are the phones, computers, Bluetooth speakers and other devices that connect to them.) It’s logical to wonder—and worry—about what effect all that wireless energy might have on your health, AzVision.az reports citing Time.

But while the volume and ubiquity of wireless devices is a new phenomenon, the kind of radiation they produce has been the subject of scientific scrutiny for decades, says John Moulder, professor emeritus of radiation oncology at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

In 2013, Moulder coauthored a review of the existing health research on Wi-Fi. Like your mobile phone, Wi-Fi routers send and receive information using radio waves, which are a form of electromagnetic radiation, he says.

New legislation in North Carolina would allow harmful 5G cell towers in neighborhoods; no citizen feedback allowed
by Ethan Huffnaturalnews.com, 6 June 2017

(Natural News) The telecommunications industry can’t wait to release the next generation of mobile phone technology, a controversial network standard known as 5G, which could be unveiled as soon as 2019. But many citizens who will be directly affected by the technology’s high-intensity radio frequencies (RFs) aren’t being kept in the loop about what’s going on, including in the state of North Carolina where legislators are right now pushing to have 5G towers located in neighborhoods without the consent of local residents.

House Bill (H.B.) 310 would allow for 5G transmitters to be installed on existing towers in public rights-of-way, greenways, conservation lands, and other types of property outside of rights-of-way (with the exception of single-family residences), without any input whatsoever from those who live near these future transmitter facilities. It would also go a step further in actually barring local governments from passing their own laws to prevent this technological invasion from occurring against the will of the people – all, of course, for the benefit of mobile phone providers.

“While the Swiss are very disappointed in the new European directive on roaming, there has been no attention accorded to the evolution of the "Phonegate" scandal, revealing that 9 out of 10 mobile phones exceed the legal standards of radiation set by the European Union when used in contact with the body. These same norms govern Switzerland. This scandal, which echoes "Dieselgate" in terms of the failure of international monitoring protocols, risks to be even more serious.” - Extract from "Phonegate" - Readers' Mail, Tribune de Genève, 13 July 2017

“PhoneGate… is more about the massive discrepancy between how phones are tested and how they are actually used in real life. In other words, the cell phone makers aren’t deceiving the regulators. After 2017 released data of the French government showed excessive levels of microwave radiation from mobile phones, Gilles Brégant, Director-General of the French National Frequencies Agency (ANFR) promised to release additional test details.

Last year, the French National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES) published a report entitled, “Exposure to Radiofrequencies and Child Health,” showing the most phones failed to meet current standards for radiation and pledging to release test methods and results. By not keeping its commitment and releasing these details a year later, ANFR is abrogating its duty to public health and the environment. While secondary insurers do not cover phone manufacturers for health damages, a new European Directive (Dir 2014/53/UE) protects the uninsurable industry from possible legal actions (article 42).

Because of this agency inaction, French physician Marc Arazi is appealing directly to the Director-General of ANFR as well as to Nicolas Hulot, Minister for the Ecological Transition, and Agnès Buzyn, Minister for Health.

Abstract

In May 2011 the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) evaluated cancer risks from radiofrequency (RF) radiation. Human epidemiological studies gave evidence of increased risk for glioma and acoustic neuroma. RF radiation was classified as Group 2B, a possible human carcinogen. Further epidemiological, animal and mechanistic studies have strengthened the association. In spite of this, in most countries little or nothing has been done to reduce exposure and educate people on health hazards from RF radiation. On the contrary ambient levels have increased. In 2014 the WHO launched a draft of a Monograph on RF fields and health for public comments. It turned out that five of the six members of the Core Group in charge of the draft are affiliated with International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), an industry loyal NGO, and thus have a serious conflict of interest. Just as by ICNIRP, evaluation of non-thermal biological effects from RF radiation are dismissed as scientific evidence of adverse health effects in the Monograph. This has provoked many comments sent to the WHO. However, at a meeting on March 3, 2017 at the WHO Geneva office it was stated that the WHO has no intention to change the Core Group.

Arizona Sen. John McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee with a well-known maverick streak that often vexes his GOP colleagues, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor, his office said in a statement Wednesday.

The 80-year-old lawmaker has glioblastoma, an aggressive cancer, according to doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, where McCain had a blood clot removed from above his left eye last Friday.

"Subsequent tissue pathology revealed that a primary brain tumor known as a glioblastoma was associated with the blood clot," his office said in a statement.

According to the American Brain Tumor Association, more than 12,000 people a year are diagnosed with glioblastoma, a particularly aggressive type of tumor. The American Cancer Society puts the five-year survival rate for patients over 55 at about 4 percent.

It's the same type of tumor that struck McCain's close Democratic colleague in legislative battles, the late Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts.

The tumor digs tentacle-like roots into normal brain tissue. Patients fare best when surgeons can cut out all the visible tumor, which happened with McCain's tumor, according to his office. That isn't a cure; cancerous cells that aren't visible still tend to lurk, the reason McCain's doctors are considering further treatment, including chemotherapy and radiation.

Although these people are sick, their illness is difficult to diagnose, and it’s even harder to convince others that it actually exists. Their symptoms include cluster headaches, nausea, chronic fatigue, a burning sensation on the skin, and a metallic taste in the mouth. Sufferers claim the cause is wireless technology. There’s no known cure, and the only way to alleviate the symptoms seems to be to distance themselves from electronic devices and the influence of omnipresent wireless networks.

Fukushima Radiation and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Fukushima Radiation and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics
by Dahr Jamail, Truthout / EcoWatch, 17 July 2017

Former nuclear industry senior vice president Arnie Gunderson, who managed and coordinated projects at 70 U.S. atomic power plants, is appalled at how the Japanese government is handling the Fukushima nuclear crisis.

"The inhumanity of the Japanese government toward the Fukushima disaster refugees is appalling," Gunderson, a licensed reactor operator with 45 years of nuclear power engineering experience and the author of a bestselling book in Japan about the Fukushima Daiichi disaster, told Truthout.

He explains that both the Japanese government and the atomic power industry are trying to force almost all of the people who evacuated their homes in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster to return "home" before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

This March Japan's federal government announced the subsidies that have, up until now, been provided to Fukushima evacuees who were mandated to leave their homes are being withdrawn, which will force many of them to return to their contaminated prefecture out of financial necessity.

And it's not just the Japanese government. The International Olympic Commission is working overtime to normalize the situation as well, even though conditions at Fukushima are anything but normal. The commission even has plans for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to have baseball and softball games played at Fukushima.

Digital Addiction - What Do We Do As Parents?

Digital Addiction – What do we do as parents?

When I grew up, the closest thing we had to the Internet was the local library. And a mobile phone was something you played with by tying long pieces of string to tin cans. We even had walkie talkies, which were really cool. Our television programmes started in the afternoon and generally you only had two or three channels to choose from. Wireless was an old-fashioned word for the radio and digital addiction wasn’t even a thing.

The Millennial Generation has had a very different childhood experience. The explosion of technology in recent decades has been significant and this has impacted young children considerably. The number of electronic toys for children and teens has slowly replaced “regular toys”. Books have been replaced by e-readers, board games by apps, even pets have been replaced with apps and robotic equivalents that claim to be just like the real thing.

But what impact is this technology having on our children?

Apple Warns of Cell Phone Radiation (December 2016 Article)

"Apple reacts to measurements that have determined that the two latest products, the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 plus, have a significantly higher radiation load than older models."

Apple warns of cell phone radiation
Prof. Dr. Klaus Buchner, 8 December 2016 (Google translation)

(Brussels / 08.12.2016) Dramatic twist in assessing the dangers posed by cell phone radiation: One of the world's largest manufacturers of mobile phones, the US manufacturer Apple, now recommends using a headset when talking to the iPhone Activate the hands-free option. In addition, the company advises to carry the iPhone always at least 5 mm away from the body. In a message from Apple, the recommended measures are: "This ensures that the load is not above the values determined in the tests. Enclosures with metal parts may alter the RF (high-frequency) performance of the equipment and adversely affect its compliance with the RF power guidelines in a manner that has not been tested or certified. World Health Organization, radiofrequency radiation and health - a hard nut to crack (Review)

Hardell L. World Health Organization, radiofrequency radiation and health - a hard nut to crack (Review). International Journal of Oncology. Published online on: June 21, 2017. https://doi.org/10.3892/ijo.2017.4046

Discussion with Emilie van Deventer on the Status of the Environmental Health Criteria

Discussion with Emilie van Deventer on the status of the Environmental Health Criteria
by Dariusz Leszczynski, BRHP, 18 July 2017

At the recent BioEM2017 meeting in Hangzhou, China, I spoke at length with Emilie van Deventer (EvD), Head of the WHO EMF Project, about the current status of the work on the Environmental Health Criteria (EHC) for the RF-EMF.

Emilie van Deventer has doctorate in electrical engineering and she is an Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Toronto in Canada.

Below is what I got to know and what I did not get to know from Emilie van Deventer, in our face-to-face discussion in Hangzhou and subsequent e-mail exchange…

Current status of the EHC draft document

China’s Religious Revival Fuels Environmental Activism

" 'China doesn’t lack money — it lacks a reverence for the environment,' Abbot Yang said. 'Our morals are in decline and our beliefs have been lost.'... Xuan Jing, a Taoist monk, said Western notions of the environment were focused on treating symptoms of a problem, not the underlying disease. 'You must cure the soul before you can cure the symptoms,' he said. 'The root lies with human’s desires.' "

MAO MOUNTAIN, China — Far from the smog-belching power plants of nearby cities, on a hillside covered in solar panels and blossoming magnolias, Yang Shihua speaks of the need for a revolution.

Mr. Yang, the abbot of Mao Mountain, a sacred Taoist site in eastern China, has grown frustrated by indifference to a crippling pollution crisis that has left the land barren and the sky a haunting gray. So he has set out to spur action through religion, building a $17.7 million eco-friendly temple and citing 2,000-year-old texts to rail against waste and pollution.

Rises in life expectancy 'levelling off'
by Nick Trigglem Health correspondent, BBC News, 18 July 2017

Austerity may be starting to affect life expectancy in England, according to a leading health expert.

Life expectancy has been rising for decades, but the latest data shows the rate of increase has slowed.

University College London expert Sir Michael Marmot said he was "deeply concerned" by the situation, saying it was "entirely possible" austerity was affecting how long people live.

His suggestion has been dismissed by the government, however.

The Department of Health said it was providing the necessary support and funding to ensure life expectancy "continues to increase".

Sooke, British Columbia, has rejected a plan by Freedom Mobile to erect a 50-metre cellphone tower in the municipality even as cellphone reliability remains a problem, reports the Sooke News Mirror.

Mayor Maja Tait, who voted against the tower, stated: “I do appreciate what Freedom is trying to do in terms of service. The challenge is the impact it has on the neighbourhood.”

The application by Freedom, which is currently expanding the footprint of its new 4G LTE network, would allow for coverage to customers along Sooke Road from the town centre eastward toward Victoria.

Take home notes (ADHD and Autism concerns):

1. The findings of our new study published in "Anatomy and Cell Biology" journal shows that exposure to GSM 900 MHz mobile phone radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) decreases the proliferation of neural stem cells (NSCs).
2. Decreased neuronal differentiation in NSCs was also observed in cells exposed to RF-EMF.
3. Exposure to GSM 900 MHz RF-EMF does not influence NSCs viability and apoptosis.
4. Active neurogenesis from the stem cells occurs during the first trimester of pregnancy, which could possibly get affected by accumulating dose of exposure to mobile phone RF-EMF.
5. Further research is needed to verify if exposure to mobile phone RF-EMF during the first trimester of pregnancy is associated with increased susceptibility to disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism in the offspring .

We’re losing a whole generation of young men to video games
by Kyle Smithnypost.com, 8 July 2017

One night in the mid-1990s I tried out a computer game called “Civilization.” You started with a screen that was completely black, except for one square of land. As you pushed outward from this base, you’d make discoveries about the land around you and its inhabitants. You’d start to build a society, first primitive stuff like granaries, then advancing to roads and weapons.

Trade-offs would arise: Should I build a library or a cannon? As your world advanced, you’d run into other civilizations. It was disconcerting to discover somebody else had a battleship while you were working with catapults. As I was journeyed through all of these fascinating challenges, I discovered to my surprise that the sun had come up. Something had gone haywire with time. It was already 7 a.m.

Too many children being prescribed melatonin to aid sleep, experts warn
by Sarah Marsh @sloumarsh, The Guardian,
29 May 2017

Some specialists concerned use of hormone has become a ‘fashionable treatment’ for parents who want ‘perfect children’The hormone melatonin is being handed out too readily to children who are struggling to sleep, despite the fact little is known about the long-term risks of taking it, experts have warned.

Melatonin, a hormone the body produces naturally in reaction to darkness that helps prepare us for sleep, has been authorised for use among the over-55s, and has been hailed as a less-addictive alternative to drug treatments for insomnia.

But after a surge in the number of children under 14 being admitted to hospital with sleep disorders over the last decade, specialists are concerned that it is being given to children ”off label” – with little knowledge of the long-term safety or side-effects. They fear that it may be being overprescribed by paediatricians and has become a fashionable treatment for parents who want “perfect” children.

Mobile Technology and Child and Adolescent Development

Mobile technology and child and adolescent development
medicalxpress.com, 30 May 2017

A new special section of Child Development shows how particularly diverse the use of mobile technology is among children and adolescents, and points to great complexity in the effects of that usage.

This special section of Child Development, edited by Dr. Zheng Yan and Dr. Lennart Hardell, adds important information to the research in this area. It includes articles from national and international scholars on the complicated impact mobile technology has on infants, toddlers, children, teens and parents.

"There are nearly three billion children and adolescents in the world," said Yan. "Most of them were, are, or will be various types of mobile technology users, interacting with and being influenced by mobile technology in numerous ways."

Why You Should Take Disposal of E-Waste Seriously

Why You Should Take Disposal of E-Waste Seriously
by Anurit Kantibusinessworld.in,
13 July 2017

The generation of e-waste is set to exponentially increase, given that more and more of technology becomes obsolete with rapid technological progress.

It becomes increasingly important to employ effective recycling, manufacturing and disposal tools to properly manage e-waste, especially given the fact that the life cycle of various products is continuously decreasing.

This means that the generation of e-waste is set to exponentially increase, given that more and more of technology becomes obsolete with rapid technological progress. For developing countries, this is a major problem as lack of regulation and an effective legal framework causes them to be the biggest importers of e-waste from developing countries.

Life and death in Apple’s forbidden city
by Brian Merchant, The Guardian,
18 June 2017

In an extract from his new book, Brian Merchant reveals how he gained access to Longhua, the vast complex where iPhones are made and where, in 2010, unhappy workers started killing themselves

The sprawling factory compound, all grey dormitories and weather-beaten warehouses, blends seamlessly into the outskirts of the Shenzhen megalopolis. Foxconn’s enormous Longhua plant is a major manufacturer of Apple products. It might be the best-known factory in the world; it might also might be among the most secretive and sealed-off. Security guards man each of the entry points. Employees can’t get in without swiping an ID card; drivers entering with delivery trucks are subject to fingerprint scans. A Reuters journalist was once dragged out of a car and beaten for taking photos from outside the factory walls. The warning signs outside – “This factory area is legally established with state approval. Unauthorised trespassing is prohibited. Offenders will be sent to police for prosecution!” – are more aggressive than those outside many Chinese military compounds.

Cell phone and children: any risk?
by Dr. Igor Yakymenko,
carelessscience.com,
8 April 2017

According to the Einstein Healthcare Network’s survey, presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics conference in April 2015, among American children younger than one year old, 36% have touched or scrolled a smartphone screen, 24% used smartphone for calls and 52% watched TV on a mobile device. As for older kids, Israel Today reported recently that 83% of Israeli children and adolescents aged 8–15 are in possession of a smartphone, and 93% of these children use their mobile devices for at least 4 hours every day. Maybe I am too optimistic, but I guess most parents have some dim idea that those microwaves from iPhone can be noxious in some way for their kids, but no one tells you exactly, they think. Wrong. Science exactly knows this type of radiation is harmful for kid’s organism. Let’s see the facts.

"Phonegate"

"Phonegate"
Readers' Mail, Tribune de Genève, 13 July 2017

While the Swiss are very disappointed in the new European directive on roaming, there has been no attention accorded to the evolution of the "Phonegate" scandal, revealing that nine mobile phones out of ten exceed the legal standards of radiation set by the European Union when used in contact with the body.  These same norms govern Switzerland.

This scandal, which echoes "Dieselgate" in terms of the failure of international monitoring protocols, risks to be even more serious.  While Switzerland does not want to hear about this, some associations for the protection of public health in the United States have brought it to light.

A French physician, Marc Arazi, the person launching the alert on "Phonegate", has just written to the French Ministers for Health and Ecology to ask them to take urgent measures to inform the population of the risks and preventive measures such as carrying and using the cell phone at a distance from the body, recommended in all the manufacturers' user guides.

As for the Federal Councilors Alain Berset and Doris Leuthard, there is total silence because the Confederation is the major share-holder in Swisscom and promotes digital technology without warning consumers of the risks.  Where then are the authorities who are really concerned about the health of citizens?
